Arts, Briefly: Criminal Charges Sought for Suge Knight

The district attorney’s office of Clark County, Nev., is seeking criminal charges against the hip-hop mogul Marion Knight, known as Suge, below, The Associated Press reported. A criminal complaint was sent to the Las Vegas Justice Court on Monday charging Mr. Knight with two counts of felony drug possession and one count of misdemeanor battery. The charges stem from an incident in August when Mr. Knight, the founder of the now-bankrupt label Death Row Records, was arrested after officers said they saw him beat a woman while brandishing a knife in a parking lot near the Las Vegas Strip. Mr. Knight was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and was later released after posting $19,000 bail.

A lawyer for Michael Jackson, below, said that the pop star may be too sick to travel to London to testify in a suit filed against him by a Bahrainian prince, The Associated Press reported. Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain, filed suit against Mr. Jackson seeking repayment for money he gave to Mr. Jackson beginning in 2005, including $2.2 million dollars to cover Mr. Jackson’s legal bills in a child-molestation trial in Los Angeles that year; Mr. Jackson contends that those payments were gifts. A lawyer for the sheik plans to play in court a song written by the sheik and recorded by Mr. Jackson as proof of their close collaboration; Mr. Jackson is seeking to give his testimony by video from the United States.

Dan Fogler, start working out your vocal cords: the burly actor, below, who was a Tony winner for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” has been cast as the burly comedian Sam Kinison in a biographical film for HBO, Variety reported. The film, “Brother Sam,” will tell the story of Kinison, the one-time Pentecostal preacher turned standup performer, who died in a car accident in 1992 at 38. It is adapted from the memoir of the same name, written by the comedian’s brother and manager, Bill Kinison, and Steve Delsohn, and will be directed by Tom Shadyac (“The Nutty Professor,” “Bruce Almighty”). A script has been written by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the writers and directors of the film “American Splendor,” about the comic-book writer Harvey Pekar.

A vast fleet of pianos is expected to arrive in Cincinnati next month, part of the largest order — by number of instruments — ever filled by the Steinway & Sons piano company. The College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati said it was plunking down $4.1 million for 165 pianos, to be delivered over the course of the academic year. (That’s 14,520 keys, for whoever’s counting.) The idea is partly to help raise the school’s profile in the conservatory world, where it is not always viewed as in the top rank, said Douglas Knehans, the dean. “It sends a deep message about our seriousness and credibility,” he said.

National Public Radio announced that it had chosen the firm Hickok Cole Architects to design its new headquarters in Washington. The firm, led by Michael E. Hickok and Yolanda Cole, was chosen over three other contenders for a design that will incorporate an existing four-story building at 1111 North Capitol Street NE (built in 1927 for the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company) within a new 10-story structure. The 360,000-square-foot headquarters will include a 60,000-square-foot studio, as well as a studio space for public events, and an exhibition called “This Is NPR.” No start date was announced for construction.
