We would not have bid for Olympic games during recession, says Tessa Jowell

The government would probably not have bid to stage the Olympic games if the decision had come in the midst of the current economic downturn, Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister, has acknowledged. Carling Cup: Sunderland 1-2 Blackburn

It is doubtful if Roque Santa Cruz will still be a Blackburn Rovers player by the time the Carling Cup final comes round in March but the Paraguay striker certainly helped propel Paul Ince's side into the quarter-finals last night.Within two minutes of stepping off the bench Santa Cruz headed Rovers into a rather unlikely lead before transforming them into a suddenly menacing ensemble. Fifa had informed candidate nations that it intended to hold a dual tender for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. But with the vote set for March 2011, a quarter of the 24 executive committee members dissented against that itinerary, saying that to decide the destination of a tournament 11 years in advance was unjustifiable...

Styles puts himself in the line of fire at Bolton

Rob Styles has been chosen to referee Bolton's home match with Liverpool on Saturday, the first time he will be taking a game involving Gary Megson's side since controversially awarding a penalty against them at Old Trafford on September 27. Styles incorrectly judged that in the 60th minute the defender Jlloyd Samuel had tripped Cristiano Ronaldo who scored from the resulting spot-kick before Wayne Rooney got another goal 13 minutes later to secure a 2-0 win for Manchester United. Megson and his players were furious with Styles and it appeared then that he would be demoted to the Championship by Keith Hackett, the manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, for the mistake...
