Carling Cup: Manchester United 1-0 QPR

On a night when most of Sir Alex Ferguson's A-list footballers were watching from the stands, Carlos Tevez could be forgiven if he had mixed feelings about turning out in the Carling Cup, against strange opposition, in a typically Mancunian downpour, but the Argentinian can at least reflect on a decisive contribution, with the goal that sent Manchester United into the quarter-finals.It came from the penalty spot, 14 minutes from the end of an otherwise soporific match in which Queens Park Rangers seemed so intent on keeping out their opponents they seemed to forget that opposition teams are allowed to attack United, too...

Carling Cup: Arsenal 3-0 Wigan Athletic

On a flawless night for Arsenal it was only their stadium disc jockey who fluffed his lines. He was so desperate to unleash Teenage Kicks at full-time that he pressed play fractionally too early. The crowd, however, had already got theirs from a group of players who were not even twinkles in their fathers' eyes when the Undertones released their hit single. The feel-good factor at the club is not confined to the first team. Arsène Wenger had rung the changes from the side that restored morale in the Premier League against Manchester United on Saturday and he watched his second string produce a performance full of sumptuous class...

Carling Cup round-up: Delight for Derby

Two goals inside the first 18 minutes helped Derby County defeat Leeds United 2-1 at Pride Park. All the goals came in the first half with the hosts taking the lead on six minutes thanks to Emanuel Villa's left-footed shot. Paul Jewell's side then made it 2-0 when Nathan Ellington scored his sixth goal of the season. 'After 18 minutes it was one-way traffic and I was wondering how many goals we were going to score,' said Jewell. 'But then they absolutely dominated possession ... they battered us for 70 minutes...

A competition that could hardly have ranked lower on Stoke City's list of priorities at the start of the season can no longer be dismissed so easily. Premier League survival remains the number one objective for Tony Pulis but the Stoke manager might have to take the League Cup a touch more seriously in the next round after a brave Rotherham United side were overcome to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 30 years.Having once again used this stage to field fringe players, Pulis was able to enjoy a comfortable evening's work ahead of Saturday's trip to Old Trafford as Stoke dominated their League Two opponents on a night when Glenn Whelan and Danny Pugh supplied the goals...

Football: Peter Kenyon says Chelsea will target developing English players

Chelsea's chief executive, Peter Kenyon, said yesterday that this month's sweeping cuts to the club's international scouting system were made because English clubs will need to develop more of their own players in coming years. In an apparent contradiction of the Premier League's position - which rejects Uefa's home-grown rule and the Fifa president Sepp Blatter's proposal for a 6+5 split of local and overseas players in domestic teams - Kenyon said Chelsea accept that those initiatives put the onus on clubs to develop young English talent...

Football: Elano breaks ranks to criticise Man City boss Hughes

Mark Hughes's problems at Manchester City were exacerbated today by the first open show of dissent from within his dressing room as Elano Blumer reacted to losing his place in the team by going public with his grievances.Elano has been a substitute for the last two games but his differences with Hughes go beyond team selection and there is a strong possibility the Brazilian will be moved on in the January transfer window. While his form has generally been good, Hughes has increasing misgivings about the player's attitude and after one win in the last seven league games, a slump that has left City a point above the relegation zone, the manager will take a dim view of being publicly questioned by a player who, until a week ago, had virtually been an ever-present in the side...

Cricket: Andrew Flintoff no longer left dizzy by spin thanks to Andy Flower

Nobody has batted better in India than Andy Flower. His involvement admittedly was limited, five Tests spanning nine years. But he averaged 117 and in one glorious week eight years ago he followed an unbeaten 183 in Delhi with 232 not out in Nagpur, to confirm himself as one of the finest players of spin in the modern era. There was no Anil Kumble or Harbhajan Singh against Zimbabwe in that series, but Indian Test spinners on turning Indian pitches can never be lightly dismissed.
