Uefa Cup: Manchester City 3-2 FC Twente

Steve McClaren insists he is "not in rehab" but, almost a year after his professional nadir, the former England manager has rather cleverly reinvented himself as an attack-minded continental coach.True, FC Twente lost on a night when the increasingly influential Robinho scored a goal sufficiently exquisite to reassure Manchester City's owners that £32.5m of Abu Dhabi's wealth had been well spent, but they might easily have snatched a draw. Yet if McClaren's team deserve credit for their part in an engrossing evening, Mark Hughes currently appears incapable of imbuing City with any sort of defensive resilience...

Uefa Cup: Tottenham 4-0 Dinamo Zagreb

Tottenham Hotspur's renaissance under Harry Redknapp continues. A comprehensive victory last night over the Croatian champions, in which Darren Bent scored his first hat-trick for the club and Tom Huddlestone capped an encouragingly commanding midfield performance with a spectacular goal, kept Spurs' Uefa Cup hopes alive and fanned the feelgood factor that has returned since Redknapp replaced Juande Ramos last month.Whereas Ramos's team selection suggested he, to the consternation of most of the club's supporters, assigned this tournament greater importance than the Premier League, Redknapp was at pains before last night's game to restore the natural order of things by insisting domestic survival took precedence over any European exploits...

The Flat turf season's finale on Saturday is a cause for celebration for many, not least the jump racing fans who bemoan the aloofness and lack of characters they can relate to, both equine and human, in the sport on the level.Flat turf racing is rightly criticised in some quarters but what cannot be argued away is the almost complete lack of decent midweek action in winter from now right through to the Cheltenham Festival in March.Jumps courses have made it clear they want their quality racing at the weekend when they can attract the crowds and all the key National Hunt races, aside from those run over Christmas, take place on Saturday...
